Understanding Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and the leading cause of disability in the United States. It is a degenerative disorder that is marked by the breakdown of the protective cartilage and tissues that surround joints. This degeneration of cartilage is painful and causes the joint to swell, leading to discomfort and reduced mobility of the joint. Over time, bits of cartilage and bone may chip off and float around the joint fluid. This causes an inflammatory process, which can further increase the pain felt in the joint. As osteoarthritis progresses, bony spurs known as osteophytes develop, which cause the joint space to narrow and reduce joint mobility further. In the end stage of osteoarthritis, the cartilage is completely worn away causing bone to rub against bone. This stage is extremely painful and leads to a drastic reduction of joint mobility. Physicians often recommend complete joint replacement surgery for bone on bone patients. Osteoarthritis affects up to 31 million Americans, according to the Arthritis Foundation. It can occur at any age but most commonly affects those aged 65 years or older. While any joint can be affected, it is generally the most mobile and dexterous joints that are impacted, which include the fingers, knees, and back. Some symptoms of osteoarthritis include:

  • Sore / stiff pain in affected joint(s)
  • Limited range of motion with affected joint(s) - this may improve throughout the day
  • Mild swelling around affected joint(s)
  • Pain that increases with activity or is worse at the end of the day
  • Clicking or grating sounds when moving affected joint(s)

While these symptoms may start out mildly, if not addressed they can quickly become debilitating. Often, a lifestyle change can be all that is needed to prevent the progression of osteoarthritis. Obesity, poor diet, and minimal exercise contributes to the progression of joint damage and increased inflammation. For those in advanced stages of the disease, pain may restrict mobility and interrupt daily life. At this point, physicians suggest surgery, cortisone shots, or painkillers. Unfortunately, none of these treatments are very successful. As opposed to the pain clinic model, regenerative medicine uses a naturopathic approach to address chronic pain rather than hiding it while it continues to worsen.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis differs slightly to osteoarthritis as it is classed as an autoimmune disorder. It is estimated that 1.5 million people suffer from this affliction within the United States. Unlike osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis usually affects younger people, with the most common age range being between 30 and 60 years old. Women are also more predisposed to developing this form of arthritis and if you have a close family relative that suffers from it, you are more likely to develop the disease. With rheumatoid arthritis, the body’s immune system attacks the cells and tissues within the one or more joints. This causes inflammation that attacks the synovium, or the tissues that line the inside of the joint, resulting in pain and reduced mobility of the joints. If this inflammation continues unchecked it can damage the cartilage, leading to a degeneration of the affected joint(s). This degeneration is marked by thinned out (and eventual loss of) cartilage, narrowing joint spaces, and stiff, unstable joints. As rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder, the joints affected are usually symmetrical, i.e. both hands or knees.

  • Joint pain, swelling, tenderness, and/or redness that lasts for at least 6 weeks
  • Prolonged morning stiffness
  • Multiple joints affected, particularly the same joints on both sides of the body
  • Smaller joints affected (i.e. the joints of the fingers, wrists, feet)
  • Fatigue, loss of appetite, and low-grade fever

Individuals that suffer from rheumatoid arthritis typically experience “flares” where symptoms are more severe and periods of milder pain in between. Unfortunately, as rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune systemic disorder, it can also affect other areas of the body, including the eyes, mouth, skin, lungs, and blood. If rheumatoid arthritis is caught and addressed early enough, however, most of the detrimental symptoms can be avoided. Physicians focus on early, aggressive treatment of inflammation in order to establish a tight control over the progression of the disorder. The medications used to target this inflammation can sometimes be detrimental to other parts of the body and have unpleasant side effects, making an alternative procedure preferable. Learn how regenerative medicine is a preferred alternative approach to the pain clinic model in addressing osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
