Shoulder Pain Treatment in Richmond

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body and it allows you to move your shoulder forward and backward and your arm up, down, sideways, and around in a circle. A shallow ball in socket joint, the shoulder is made up of the humerus, clavicle, shoulder blade, and the rotator cuff. The rotator cuff is made up of four tendons that connect the muscles in your shoulder joint to bone. A torn rotator cuff is a common shoulder injury that can lead to chronic inflammation and pain. Additionally, disorders such as arthritis, bursitis, tendinitis, bone spurs, pinched nerves, and/or overuse can also lead to chronic inflammation. Inflammation causes the degeneration and deterioration of healthy tissues and tendons which is the main cause of chronic shoulder pain. When the tissues of the shoulder become severely degenerated, it can lead to loss of motion of the arm and shoulder. Doctors typically suggest cortisone shots, pain medication, or surgery to manage chronic shoulder pain. Unfortunately, these treatments do not have very positive outcomes. Even patients who receive surgery to repair rotator cuff tears often experience ongoing chronic pain.

At Chronic Care of Richmond our doctors in Richmond practice an alternative, naturopathic based, non-invasive and drug free therapy for chronic shoulder pain. Utilizing chronic pain treatment, our therapy allows the body to perform its natural healing processes. Our procedure addresses both the chronic pain and tissue degeneration that our patients experience.

Chronic Shoulder Pain Symptoms and Causes

Some of the conditions that can cause chronic shoulder pain include:

A bursa is a fluid-filled sac that cushions bones and soft tissues in joints. Bursitis is the swelling or inflammation of a bursa. The condition can occur due to repetitive movements, overuse, or injury from a fall. It commonly affects people who do manual labor, such as carpentry or gardening. Bursitis most often occurs in the shoulder and may develop in the elbow and hip. It sometimes develops when arthritis affects the joint.

Tendons connect muscle to bone. Inflammation of a tendon (tendonitis) can be caused by injury or overuse; it also can occur with rheumatoid arthritis and other types of arthritis, diabetes, gout, thyroid disease, or other conditions that cause an increase in blood sugar levels. Tendinitis most often occurs at the front of the shoulder (subacromial bursitis).

Inflammation of the joints is referred to as arthritis. Both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis affect the shoulder. Degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis result from wear and tear over time. The body attacks its own cells in rheumatoid arthritis, causing inflammation and joint damage.

The rotator cuff comprises four tendons that surround the shoulder joint and help to hold it together while lifting and rotating your arm. Tendonitis occurs when these tendons become inflamed, usually due to repetitive stress or strain on the joint. A rotator cuff tear occurs when one or more tendons in the rotator cuff become torn, usually due to falling on an outstretched arm or repeatedly lifting heavy weights overhead.

Chronic Care of Richmond Shoulder Treatment Program

If you are experiencing chronic shoulder pain in Richmond, chronic pain therapy may be a beneficial alternative to traditional shoulder pain clinic models. This innovative therapy can address shoulder pain that occurs constantly, intermittently, or only during activity. At Chronic Care of Richmond, our patients can be in and out in as little as 30 minutes. Our non-invasive procedure requires no recovery time and is relatively painless. Patients see both immediate and continued results. Our therapy works with your body to support its natural ability to heal itself overtime. Unlike invasive surgeries or painful cortisone shots that actually hinder healing, our treatment utilizes what is naturally found in every body. By utilizing them in our chronic pain therapy, we are simply helping your body do what it already does best. Contact us today if you believe that chronic pain therapy may benefit you or a loved one.

Depending on the nature of your shoulder pain, traditional treatments may include one or more of the following treatments:

  • Ice therapy to reduce swelling and inflammation
  • Heat pad applied to shoulder
  • NSAIDs for pain relief and reduced inflammation
  • Epsom salt bath
  • Stretching within the limits of your pain and postural awareness

Effective treatment for shoulder pain may require taking a break from activities that are causing shoulder pain. Chronic Care of Richmond shoulder treatment programs are designed to keep your shoulder moving without causing further damage to muscles, tendons, and bones in order while preventing frozen shoulder.

Whether you’re distracted from work responsibilities due to shoulder pain or held back from your favorite pastime, resolving chronic pain issues with pain is crucial for living a happy and healthy lifestyle.
