What is Spinal Decompression?

Spinal decompression is a non-invasive treatment that reduces pressure in the spine, increases blood flow between the spinal discs and encourages the natural healing process of the body. This is accomplished through a measured and safe stretching of the spine on a decompression table. The patient is strapped safely into the technological table and preprogrammed instructions are initiated. The table then moves to gently stretch the spine to decompress the spinal discs and reposition the vertebrae to their natural position.

When the spine is decompressed, there is an improved flow of blood, nutrients and oxygen to the affected areas. This allows for an increased chance of healing as the body will naturally carry healing agents to the affected areas. Additionally, those suffering from bulging discs will find relief from decompression as it creates more space and allows the discs to move back into their normal positioning.

Nonsurgical spinal decompression is a safe and controlled therapy that has proven benefits. While multiple sessions are often required for maximum benefit, it is a safer and sometimes more effective alternative to surgery.

Causes of Back Pain

In many cases, it is not possible to identify the cause of a patient's back pain. In these instances, doctors will often refer to it as "non-specific" back pain. That's because back pain often occurs for no apparent reason, although sometimes the cause could be an injury or a medical condition, such as sciatica or a slipped disk. One of the most common causes of back pain is degenerative disc disease, which can often cause pain in the low back and neck. In this instance, the pain is caused by wear and tear on a spinal disc, which is often experienced as low-level chronic pain along with occasional instances of more severe pain. As back pain can be caused by many different factors, it is essential that you seek out expert care, particularly if the pain persists or if you suffer from additional problems that could be a sign of something more serious, such as chest pain, unexplained weight loss, difficulty peeing, or a high temperature. Finding the underlying cause will provide you with the best chance of finding an appropriate treatment option to help you manage your back pain.

Since back pain can be complex and difficult to diagnose, there is a wide range of treatment options available to patients. This includes a variety of nonsurgical care options that can help you alleviate or manage your back pain, including spinal decompression. To find an alternative to back pain management clinics, learn how spinal decompression therapy in Richmond could help bring relief from chronic back pain.

Symptoms and Solutions

Back pain is a common problem, with most people experiencing it at least once in their lifetime. Symptoms can include the following:

  • Shooting or stabbing pain
  • Muscle ache
  • Pain radiating down your leg
  • Pain that gets worse when you stand, walk, bend, or lift
  • Pain that improves when you recline

Fortunately, most back pain gradually improves within a few weeks and can be addressed with home treatment. However, depending on what is causing your back pain, it could persist. There are measures that can be taken to attempt to prevent back pain, including staying active, avoiding sitting for long periods of time, doing regular stretches and back exercises, improving your posture, and losing weight. Other options to alleviate the pain include taking painkillers, using cold packs, or even undergoing back surgery.

Statistics show that:

  • Lower back pain is the single leading cause of disability worldwide
  • Back pain is one of the most common reasons for missed work. In fact, back pain is the second most common reason for visits to the doctor’s office, outnumbered only by upper-respiratory infections.
  • One-half of all working Americans admit to having back pain symptoms each year.
  • Experts estimate that as much as 80% of the population will experience a back problem at some time in their lives.

Don't Let Yourself Be Told That There is No Hope
