What Causes Hair Loss in Women?

While hair loss can occur at any age, it is most commonly present in women after menopause begins. Pregnancy, birth, age, disease, treatments such as chemotherapy and tight hairstyles can also cause hair loss in women. Women with a family history of female-pattern hair loss are more likely to experience hair loss as they age.

Signs of hair loss include excessive hair shedding, noticeable areas of thinning hair, patches of baldness and broken hairs.

Chronic Care of Richmond offers PRP hair restoration for women in Richmond as an affordable and natural solution to hair loss.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Hair Restoration for Women

PRP hair restoration is a non-surgical hair restoration therapy that stimulates the body's natural hair growth process. A cutting-edge solution, PRP hair restoration addresses the root cause of hair loss and helps restore hair growth.

What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?

PRP is a potent, healing serum that is derived from your own blood. Blood contains red and white blood cells and platelets, which have healing growth factors. Platelets are responsible for blood clotting and stimulate healing in the body. PRP is simply a highly concentrated serum of these healing platelets. When PRP is injected into an area that is suffering hair loss, the abilities of this serum facilitate new hair growth.

How is PRP for Hair Restoration Made?

During the PRP hair restoration therapy, your blood will be drawn and placed into a centrifugation machine. This process separates the platelets from blood cells and increases their concentration, up to five to ten times of what is normally found in your blood. This highly concentrated serum is the PRP - it will be injected back into your scalp at the areas where you are experiencing hair loss.

How Does Female Hair Restoration with PRP Work?

Step 1

Your blood is extracted in our office and placed in the centrifugation machine.

Step 2

The centrifugation process separates red blood cells from the plasma. The platelet rich plasma (PRP) portion is rich in growth factors that will stimulate your body's natural healing process. This is the portion that will be used for your treatment.

Step 3

After the scalp is numb, the PRP is injected into the areas of your scalp that are experiencing hair loss and thinning. Mild pain may be experienced and potential side effects are minimal.

Step 4

Results are typically visible within 1-3 months after an initial series of PRP hair restoration injections. For sustained hair growth, injections are recommended every 6-12 months.

Female Hair Restoration FAQs

Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) is the most common cause of hair loss in women, affecting about 30 million women in the United States. Like male pattern hair loss, FPHL follows a specific pattern. Women will notice thinning at the part line first, then increased thinning and hair loss spreading down from the top of the head. Hair loss typically occurs for women after menopause and those with a family history of FPHL are at higher risk.

Women can also experience hair loss due to the sudden hormonal changes associated with pregnancy and birth control. Stress, poor diet, and underlying medical conditions or disease can also lead to hair loss.

From drugs, creams, plugs, and transplants, there are various treatments for hair loss available. Unfortunately, most of these therapies come with mixed results and the possibility of negative side effects. PRP hair restoration is a natural, regenerative medicine solution with a low risk of side effects.

PRP hair restoration therapy utilizes your body's own healing powers to stop hair loss and introduce hair follicle recovery. Derived from your own blood, PRP is a serum rich with healing growth factors and proteins that encourage the growth of new cells. When injected into your scalp, these platelets begin a natural healing process that improves hair thickness and increases overall hair count.

Hair loss occurs when the hair growth cycle is interrupted to the point where the follicle can no longer produce new hair. Widespread hair loss and significant balding means that your scalp has limited functioning hair follicles, reducing chances of hair recovery. Those in the early stages of hair loss, however, have much higher chances of hair recovery. Women with minimal thinning and isolated areas of hair loss are great candidates for PRP hair restoration.

Individuals suffering hair loss due to an underlying condition, like lupus or cancer, are not great candidates for this type of procedure.

As everyone has different levels of platelets in their blood, PRP treatment varies from patient to patient. While there is no defined success rate for PRP hair restoration, patients on average see significant results (up to 30% increase in hair growth) within six months of their first three treatment sessions. To maintain a steady rate of hair restoration and increased hair volume, repeated sessions are recommended every 12 months.

Results are noticeable within three to six months of the initial round of injections and continued hair restoration is possible with maintenance injections every 12 months.

Yes, PRP is one of the safest hair loss treatments available. PRP is an autologous solution, meaning it is derived from your own body. The risk of infection is incredibly low; at most, patients may experience slight soreness at the injection site. Other common hair loss treatments, such as Rogaine and transplants, carry the risk of infection and other negative side effects.

Before receiving PRP hair restoration treatment, you will be evaluated by our medical team to see if you are a good candidate for the procedure. Your symptoms, medical background, and hair loss history will be discussed and any questions you have about the procedure answered. If you are deemed a good candidate for the PRP hair restoration, you will receive three initial injections one month apart.

We ask that all PRP hair restoration patients arrive freshly shampooed. Hair spray, gels and any other hair products must not be used for up to three days prior to your appointment. We also ask patients to arrive hydrated and with a full stomach as your blood will be drawn during the procedure. Please avoid NSAIDs and anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Voltaren, and others up to a week before your appointment.

After the PRP injections, we recommend two to three days of rest, with limited vigorous activity. Gentle washing of the hair is okay, but please avoid any chemical treatments such as color or perms for at least 72 hours after.
