How to Protect Your Knees in the Spring

Spring is in full swing, and the energy of the new season comes with feelings of freshness and renewal. With beautiful weather on the horizon and flowers in bloom, it’s no wonder many people use this time of year to do some deep cleaning in their homes and yards or resume activities like cycling, running, or hiking. But before you get to work, it’s essential to take steps to avoid aggravating chronic pain flare-ups in your body—particularly in your knees. Here are some tips to help you take care of your body so that you can enjoy this wonderful time of year.


Pay Attention to Pressure Changes

The change in season may naturally cause some additional aches and pains regardless of the work you do. Rain, humidity and temperature fluctuations common in springtime change the atmospheric pressure on our bodies, which can lead to swelling and pain in your joints. 


Some find that their knees are especially susceptible to these weather changes. If you feel knee pain, consider using an ice pack for 15-20 minutes to help the swelling go down. Conversely, if your knees feel stiff, use a heating pad for 15-20 minutes to help loosen up before you get to work.



Stretch it Out

Before you do any activity that calls for repetitive motion, it’s a good idea to warm up and stretch. If you’re doing an activity like gardening that involves lifting, twisting, and getting up and down frequently, pace yourself in your work. Rather than spending the entire day hunched over to weed a flower bed, for instance, divide up your cleaning and yard work tasks over several days or weeks and take your time.


In addition to taking special care with your movements while doing yard work, consider investing in more ergonomically friendly gardening and cleaning supplies that help prevent strained muscles. Continually getting up and down is brutal on your knees, so invest in some good shoes and practice good lifting techniques to avoid injury. Keep your back straight, bring the object close to your body, then lift.
