Neuropathy in the Feet

Learn About Your Options in Richmond for Neuropathy Treatment in Feet

Peripheral neuropathy can be caused by diabetes and other conditions. This condition can cause extreme pain in the hands or feet and weakness, tingling and numbness.

Peripheral neuropathy symptoms vary from one person to another and affect various parts of the body. They may include burning, prickling, or tingling sensations (paresthesias), paralysis, weakness of the muscles, and numbness.

While some people feel only slight discomfort, others experience severe symptoms that affect their ability or daily activities like bathing and dressing. Poor blood flow or medication can cause nerve damage over time. Sometimes, you may not feel any symptoms until the foot ulcer develops. This is because your sensory loss prevents it from being felt until severe damage has occurred.

Chronic Care of Richmond's team of specialists has helped thousands of people suffering from painful peripheral neuropathy find relief using specialized treatments designed explicitly for them.

If you’ve been seeking neuropathy treatment in the feet, the treatment options at Chronic Care of Richmond may be an option for you.

What is Peripheral Neuropathy?

Peripheral neuropathy is a condition that affects the peripheral nervous system. This is the system of nerves that lies outside the brain and spinal cord. Peripheral neuropathy can cause weakness, pain and numbness — most often in the hands or feet. It can also affect digestion, urination and circulation.

Your central nervous system transmits information from the peripheral nervous system to your spinal cord through the peripheral nerves. These peripheral nerves send sensory information to the central nervous system. Trauma, metabolic problems, inherited disorders and exposure to toxic chemicals lead to peripheral neuropathy. Diabetes is a common cause of peripheral nerve damage.

Peripheral neuropathy patients describe pain that is burning or stabbing. For most cases of peripheral neuropathy, treatment is the best. The pain of peripheral neuropathy can often be reduced with medication, but that may not be the best long-term solution for patients.

Diagnosing Peripheral Neuropathy

Your doctor might suspect you may have peripheral neuropathy and refer you to a neurologist. The doctor or neurologist will ask you about your medical history and look for signs like weakness, numbness or impaired reflexes. You may need blood and urine tests to check for diabetes, vitamin, metabolic, or other conditions that affect nerve function. Your alcohol, drug consumption and smoking habits are also often evaluated.

A nerve conduction velocity test (NCV), and an electromyogram (EMG), may be performed to assess nerve function and determine electrical properties. These tests help doctors identify the location of and evaluate the extent of any nerve damage.

Additionally, a nerve and muscle biopsy could be performed. This provides valuable information about the type and cause of the neuropathy. Sometimes, a lumbar puncture (also known as a spine tap) is recommended to identify any neuropathy-associated infection or inflammation.

Your doctor might ask you to check on any relatives with peripheral nerve disease or those who have experienced similar symptoms. It’s critical to have these test and evaluations before determining a plan for Richmond neuropathy treatment in the feet, as identifying the root cause of the problem is the first step in making an effective plan.

Athletic socks may be uncomfortable for patients with peripheral neuropathy, and even soft dress socks can cause some pain. Peripheral neuropathy can be reduced by wearing padded, non-constricting socks.

Patients may benefit from wearing loose, cushioned shoes to avoid the discomfort of constricting shoes. Diabetic shoes have wider widths and more padding to support peripheral neuropathy symptoms like burning and swelling. You can also find slippers that are specifically made for patients with neuropathy. They have a larger toe box and more padding.
